Six Glosses

In 1937, as part of a research project for the National Bureau of Standards, Hunt produced a paper on gloss determination methods. In his paper, he discussed the instruments available at the time with the classification of six different types of gloss:

-Specular gloss:

Relates to how much specular reflection there is on the surface of an object and is characterized by sparkle;

-Contrast gloss (CG, contrast gloss):

Relates to the contrast between the specular reflection area and the adjacent surface area;

-DOI (distinctness-of-reflected-image gloss):

I.e.: reflected image clarity gloss; the clarity and sharpness of the image observed in the direction of the specular reflection on the surface of the object

-Absence-of-bloom gloss:

That is: with high light reflection near there is no haze (Haze) or milky (milky) appearance related to

-Sheen:

Gloss at low angles of incidence and viewing, or the small-angle glossy feel of a matte surface.

-Surface-uniformity gloss:

I.e., absence-of-surface-texture gloss, related to the perceived smoothness of the surface and the sense of matte texture or markings.
