What is the Lab Color Space and How Does it Differ from LCh?

The Lab color space (CIELab) and LCh color space (CIELCh) are both color models based on human visual perception, but they differ in how they represent colors.

Lab Color Space

The Lab color space consists of three components:

  • L (Lightness): Represents the brightness of the color, ranging from 0 to 100.

  • a (Red-Green): Represents the position between red and green, with positive values indicating red and negative values indicating green.

  • b (Yellow-Blue): Represents the position between yellow and blue, with positive values indicating yellow and negative values indicating blue.

The advantage of the Lab color space is its device independence, allowing for a more accurate description of all colors perceivable by the human eye

LCh Color Space

The LCh color space is derived from the Lab color space and uses polar coordinates to represent color attributes more intuitively. It consists of the following components:

  • L (Lightness): Same as in the Lab color space, representing the brightness of the color.

  • C (Chroma): Represents the saturation or intensity of the color.

  • h (Hue): Represents the position of the color on the color wheel, ranging from 0 to 360 degrees.

The LCh color space is advantageous because it aligns more closely with everyday descriptions of color, making color correction easier to understand and control

Differences

  1. Representation:

    • Lab: Uses Cartesian coordinates to represent color, divided into Lightness (L), Red-Green (a), and Yellow-Blue (b).

    • LCh: Uses polar coordinates to represent color, divided into Lightness (L), Chroma ©, and Hue (h).

  2. Intuitiveness:

    • Lab: More suitable for scientific and technical applications, providing precise color descriptions.

    • LCh: More intuitive for human visual perception and everyday descriptions, making it easier to understand.

  3. Applications:

    • Lab: Widely used in image processing, printing, and color management.

    • LCh: Commonly used in color correction and matching, suitable for beginners and scenarios requiring intuitive color descriptions

How to Convert Lab to LCh

To convert Lab color space values to LCh color space values, follow these steps:

  1. Lightness (L): The Lightness (L) value is the same in both Lab and LCh.

  2. Chroma ©: Calculate Chroma © using the square root of the sum of the squares of a and b.

    C = sqrt(a^2 + b^2)

  3. Hue (h): Calculate Hue (h) using the arctangent of b divided by a, and convert the result to degrees.

    h = arctan(b/a)*(180/π)
